Grant Transit Authority is a Public Transportation Benefit Area (PTBA) serving Grant County, WA. The mission of Grant Transit Authority is to provide safe, high quality & cost efficient public transportation, vanpool & dial-a-ride services which will enhance the mobility and quality of life for our citizens and promote a healthy economy and positive image for our growing communities. 

GTA offers a deviated fixed-route system, with complementary paratransit service for those individuals who have a disability which makes it impossible for them to access or use the deviated fixed-route system.

Position Overview


Under the Fleet Maintenance Manager’s direction, employee will be responsible for variety of duties, including but not limited to: fuel, service, clean and inspect automotive and diesel equipment; maintain buildings, grounds, parking lot(s), and other related facilities; and other related work as required.  This position requires heavy manual labor and the ability to work in all weather conditions.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended only as examples of the various types of functions that may be performed.  The omission of specific duties and responsibilities does not exclude them from the position if work is similar, related or a reasonable assignment of the position.

  • Operate a variety vehicles and equipment, including snow removal equipment
  • Operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment
  • Fuel, service, clean and inspect vehicles, automotive and diesel equipment, including light and heavy-duty buses
  • Inspect, adjust, replace, and maintain functional parts of automotive, diesel, and mechanical equipment
  • Repair and maintain shop equipment
  • Operate shop equipment and machinery such as drill presses, grinding equipment, and assorted tools
  • Detail the interior and exterior body of a variety of vehicles, including light and heavy-duty buses
  • Fuel all equipment, check all fluid levels and add when needed, check tire inflation and condition, check lights and other related equipment
  • Maintain cleanliness and upkeep of buildings, grounds, parking lot(s) and other related facilities
  • Participate in facilities maintenance and improvement projects as needed or assigned
  • Maintain irrigation system(s)
  • Maintain landscaping ground area(s) of related facilities
  • Pick up trash in facility area(s) and dispose of it properly
  • Maintain safe, clean and orderly work areas
  • Clean and disinfect bio-spills at all related facilities and attend Blood Borne Pathogen training when required
  • Properly label all containers of chemical products used
  • Assure safety standards are followed to comply with applicable laws and company policies and procedures
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Desired Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge

Knowledge of proper use and care of the equipment, tools and materials used in the maintenance of vehicles and equipment; occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to grounds keeping and maintenance work; employee policies, procedures and operating practices, including maintenance procedures of automotive, diesel, and mechanical equipment; terminology, work processes and legal requirements applicable to areas of responsibility; safe work practices, including proper use of chemicals; accurate record-keeping techniques; alpha and numeric filing systems; basic computer operations; and proper lifting techniques.

  • Skills

Skills to perform multiple technical tasks with a potential to need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions and/or requirements; recognize unsafe work conditions and potential safety hazards; recognize and record problems with vehicles and/or equipment; safely operate all equipment required to perform specific tasks; read material such as manuals and reports; manage and complete assigned projects; and prepare and maintain accurate, organized records.


  • Ability

Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing; follow verbal and written instructions, and perform tasks with minimal supervision; write legibly on forms and other documents; organize, set priorities, take initiative and exercise sound independent judgment within areas of responsibility; follow safe work practices; read and understand MSDS sheets and labels on chemical product(s); manage multiple and changing priorities; establish and maintain highly effective working relationships; use a variety of hand and power tools, and operate light and heavy-duty equipment; and utilize computer equipment.

  • Physical Demands

While performing duties and responsibilities of this position, incumbent is regularly required to sit, walk and stand for extended periods of time; talk and hear, both in person and via telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel or operate equipment; reach with hands and arms, including above shoulders; bend, twist and/or stoop; push and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; kneel, crouch and/or crawl; ascend or descend stairs, walk or stand on uneven surface(s); climb unusual heights on ladders or other equipment; and lift and/or carry up to 50 pounds on a regular basis without physical limitations.

Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Mental Demands

While performing duties and responsibilities of this position, incumbent is regularly required to use written and verbal communication skills; read and interpret data, information and documents; use intermediary reasoning skills to apply principles of rational systems to analyze and solve practical and complex problems; effectively cope with elevated stress; observe and interpret people and situations; learn and apply new information or skills; make necessary decisions and solve problems based on subjective or objective criteria; make frequent changes of tasks involving different aptitudes, technologies, procedures, working conditions, or degrees of attentiveness without loss of efficiency or composure; work under intensive deadlines with frequent interruptions; positively interact with supervisor, co-workers, customers, and others encountered in the course of work.

  • Work is performed in an indoor and outdoor environment, with varying weather and temperature conditions, including sudden changes in weather and temperatures.
  • Exposure to noise, dust, grease, slippery surfaces, chemicals, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, rain/snow, heat, gases, and mechanical and electrical hazards

Education, Experience and Licensing

  • High School diploma and/or equivalent
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Current and valid Class B CDL, with Air Brake endorsement and/or ability to obtain within 1 (one) year from the date of hire, per management approval
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Experience with automotive/diesel equipment preferred
  • Experience with facilities and grounds maintenance preferred
